International roundtable on environmental management in Lagos

Thursday June 9, in partnership with the University of Lagos, the Embassy of France and the French Institute of Nigeria, a round table was held at the Julius Berger Hall in the university, in Yaba, gathering experts in urban environmental management.

In order to benefit from a balanced debate and a high level of expertise, the speakers were each representing a different domain related to environmental issues:

- Public Policy (Ahmed Olajide Saula, Lagos State)
- Civil society / NGOs (Olayemi Awopetu, NAPEEIN)
- Environmental Entrepreneurship (Lolande Oresanwo, WestAfrica REC)
- and research / academics (Dr. Amokaye, UNILAG, and Dr. Bénédicte Florin, University of Tours, France)

This round table, entitled "The environment in big cities of Nigeria: which ecological management for Lagos?" was moderated by Professor B.I. Alo, an expert in environmental chemistry and a member of the Nigerian delegation to Paris at COP 21.

The Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Affairs, Arnaud Dornon, reminded the audience in his speech about the will of the Embassy of France to continue its work on environmental issues in Nigeria, particularly in large cities, and the importance of public awareness and dissemination of knowledge about ecological issues.

About 150 people attended this round table, which allowed participants to exchange ideas and experiences, and to share them with an audience largely composed of students, academics, NGOs representatives and environmental entrepreneurs.

Co-financed by the D’Alembert Fund, a special fund of the French Institute Paris for discussions of ideas, on important subjects as well as anchored locally, this roundtable is the first of a cycle that will continue in September in French Institute in Abuja and in November in Ibadan, at IFRA.

The Embassy of France in Nigeria has already planned other conferences and round tables in partnership with the University of Lagos, on various subjects, systematically involving renowned specialists.

Thank you to all participants and partners in this operation.
